There are two main types of vehicle wheelchair lifts. There are internal and external vehicle wheelchair lifts. Both types of lifts allow you to transport your wheelchair or scooter with your vehicle. The difference is how they get your wheelchair or scooter on or in the vehicle.
An internal wheelchair lift is designed to lift and store your wheelchair or scooter inside of your vehicle. Most internal wheelchair lifts are installed inside of the vehicle and are perfect for vans and SUVs that have a lot of room so that the lift and scooter can fit. There are a few internal wheelchair lifts however that install on the hitch of the vehicle, but still lift your wheelchair or scooter and is able to place it inside your vehicle. This is a great choice if you have the room to install it, as it offers the most secure method of transportation and keeps your wheelchair or scooter away from the weather.
External wheelchair lifts attach to the rear hitch of your vehicle, and the wheelchair or scooter is transported on the outside of the vehicle. There are multiple kinds of external wheelchair lifts, some are manually operated where you drive the wheelchair or scooter up a ramp and secure it in the lift, and others are fully automated, where you simply drive your wheelchair or scooter onto the platform, press a button and it lifts it up for you.
